Genji began as a popular Japanese restaurant in Philadelphia,
named after the title character in “The Tale of Genji,”
the first Japanese novel ever written. This little restaurant on
Sansom Street was a home-town favorite for many years.
We've been in Whole Foods since 1997.
Whole Foods Market began to open stores in Philadelphia in 1997, and while looking for the best authentic sushi establishment, they discovered Genji. We welcomed the opportunity to work with Whole Foods, and quickly found that Whole Foods’ customers appreciated our founding values of quality, freshness, authenticity, and customer service.
Today, Genji operates over 215 sushi bars in the US & UK.
Today, Genji operates over 215 sushi bar locations, over 40 Pan-Asian venues including Ramen, Poké, and Wok in the United States and in the United Kingdom, and is the largest sushi vendor within the Whole Foods Market chain. Our 900+ chefs undergo rigorous training to reach the top of their craft, and continuously maintain class-leading food safety, and unsurpassed customer service.
In 2016, Genji achieved the prestigious ISO 14001 Certification.
Genji is proud to be the first sushi company in North America to achieve the prestigious ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification. Since 2011, we have only used seafood that is rated green or yellow by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch.
